the full monty, the musical

Saw the musical The Full Monty tonight at Balagan Theatre. A very small theatre, but they had a rotating stage which allowed for some decent scene changes. Jenni and I are very fond of the movie and know it very well, so it was interesting to see how it would translate into a musical set in Buffalo. It's not bad. Reasonably catchy music, and some decent acting.

The thing that makes the film great is editing: the film is extremely tight, and doesn't ever waste time. It is hard to achieve this quality in a musical unless you go the crazy, madcap route (we recently saw Cannibal:The Musical which takes this tack, and it was terrific). As a musical, I thought The Full Monty dragged a little compared to the film, especially in the songs intended to be more poignant.

Went out to the theatre tonight and saw Tom Stoppard's Rock And Roll at ACT. I was afraid I wouldn't like it, but I ended up liking it a little, maybe in the B- to C+ range. The second act is much better than the first one, much more human.

Before the show, we ate at Navya Lounge, which is an odd Indian restaurant in downtown mall of sorts. It is never very busy, and when we walked in and saw many empty tables but were asked by the hostess, "Do you have a reservation?" at least one of us laughed. While we ate, though, the place did fill up with quite a few people who it seemed came to see the show that started in the lounge while we were there. There was a small stage and a dance troupe doing what my uninformed self would call Bollywood-style dancing to canned Bollywood music. It was amusing.

In other news, I'm wondering if it is possible to come up with a way to analyze asymptotes for general algebraic curves in two variables. I've wondered this for a while, and not gotten around to looking into it much. I should do so.
